Hi!! For my last blog post of the year, I will be reviewing the 3rd book in The Naturals series, All In (yes, I read the second one but didn’t feel like reviewing it lol. It was good though). The premise of this book is overall the same as the first (if you want to read more in-depth you can look at my last post), just with a different killer and character as the main focus. The story takes place in Las Vegas where Cassie and her friends have to solve a string of murders that had been taking place at various casinos around the city, beginning right after the New Year. But there is one strange thing, these murders don’t seem like they were committed by the same person, as the MO (modus operandi, basically a killer’s way of doing things: picking the victim, murder weapon, etc.) was different each time, the first victim was a young female and drowned, the second was a middle aged man who burned to death, the third an older man who was impaled, and so on. The killer seems to be killing one person at a different casino nightly, and the Naturals have to figure out who they are and where they will strike next before another person gets hurt. Also, just to add in a little trauma, Sloane (one of the Naturals. Also a slight spoiler in the rest of this sentence, but not major) is revealed to be the illegitimate child of the man who owns the casino/hotel she and her friends are staying at. BUT WAIT. For some added drama, Cassie’s mother (who went missing but they never found a body) was found dead, so more trauma for our dear friend Cassie.
Now, I didn’t go much into the plot, because it basically follows the same story progression as the other two books and about half of it is spoilers, so I couldn’t add those, but All In was a really good book. Once again, there were interesting excerpts written from the killer’s point of view which were really good, and overall, the writing is amazing. Here's a short example of the writing (no spoilers!):
Anything can be counted. The hairs on her head. The words she’s spoken to you. The number of breaths she has left.
It’s beautiful, really. The numbers. The girl. The things you have planned.
The thing you’re destined to become.
There was also significantly less drama around the love triangle because Cassie chose one of the two guys, Dean and Micheal, in the 2nd book, so there are minimal problems with an annoying love triangle. The love story also isn’t shoved in your face, which I found nice, because a lot of books like going way too in depth with the lovers and miss the point of the actual plot of the book. I could, however, do with less trauma dumping. Basically, everyone and their mother got their traumatic past revealed (except Dean, but after the last book, he deserves a break), which was annoying, to say the least.
I do think that All In was the best book so far, though that might change with the last book. The story had good progression,
and I found the dilemma with the killer to be interesting, though I can’t really say what it was because of spoilers. Overall, All In is a really good book and I would recommend it.
Thanks for reading!
