Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by Jack Thorne is a continuation of the well-known series Harry Potter, by J. K. Rowling. While she agreed to let Thorne use her material when making the story, she didn’t really partake in much writing after that. As opposed to the series, the Cursed Child is a play, so the book published is actually a script. I remember the first time I read it. My family friend, Jas, loved to read and always introduced new books to me. After she finished reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, she gave it to me and I finished it on the same day when I was at her house (probably the fastest I’ve ever read a book). I can’t remember well what my initial reactions were, but since that day, I’ve re-read the script book a few times. From recent readings, I believe that the start is kinda too slow of a pace for me, again, maybe because I’ve reread it a few times, but once the climax is reached, it’s actually really interesting. But anyway, time for the actual story (spoilers ahead!).
The story begins where the series ended: Albus’s first year at Hogwarts. Harry Potter’s son… so great, right? Yeah, no. The sorting hat sorted Albus into Slytherin. Right off the bat, everyone started comparing him to his father. Throughout this whole story, Albus tries to deal with this whole “in his dad’s shadow”, trying to live up to his legacy. This is when a new character comes in: Delphi Diggory (or so we thought). Delphi Diggory, actually Delphi Riddle, pretends to be Amos Diggory’s niece, and uses Albus’ position to manipulate him into helping her. She tells Albus how there’s a Time-Turner which the ministry is hiding which they could use to go back and save Cedric to help their grieving family. Albus, wanting to be the hero of something, agrees, and they go find and use the Time-Turner. In the end, it’s revealed that she’s Voldemorts secret child. This whole time she was trying to get the Time-Turner to try to go back and make sure the curse never rebounded in 1981, when he tried to kill Harry by preventing him from reaching Godric's Hollow.
I would really recommend reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child if you’ve read the Harry Potter series, because while it might not stay up to par with the original storyline, it still has an interesting plot and delves deep into character development (which I did not talk about). I definitely like the original series more, but I do think it would be interesting to see it in theaters one day. I’m also really interested in other opinions regarding the book from those who have already read it.
ANYWAY, THANK YOU FOR READING!!!
Isa
This sounds like a really interesting book. I don't know much about this book, but do you think a sequel would come and it would be kind of like Harry Potter, following each of his years at Hogwarts, or if it works well alone? Also, I wonder if the story was pretty heavily based on J. K. Rowling's material kind of like how Christopher Tolkien published his father's unfinished works like the Silmarillion, or if it was more of a spin-off.
ReplyDeleteHi Isa! I have heard about this book/script before, and I never knew anything about it. It sounds really interesting to see what happened after the main book series! Great post!
ReplyDeleteI have never really finished reading the series (I was about half way done with the last book, many years ago), but it's interesting to know that such a popular series got a continuation.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that I like the original series more, but this book is also good. It always confused me how Voldemort had a kid, but I guess it's for the plot. After reading your post, I want to reread the book again!
ReplyDeleteHello Isa! I have never heard of a script book before and it sounds really unique and interesting! After I try to start and finish the Harry Potter series (I read the first page of the first book in fifth grade and it was too boring so I closed the book), I will be sure to check this script book next!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a very interesting blog post about one of Harry Potter's books! I'm going to start reading them soon and this only makes me more excited. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteI started reading this book, but then I felt that it was hard to read because of the script format. The plot sounds really interesting, though. Maybe I'll give it another try!
ReplyDeleteThe script format seems like it would be interesting to read through, and the concept kinda sounds like if a fan fiction got published. Great job with the post!
ReplyDeleteI never knew that Cursed Child was written by a different author. Now it makes sense that Harry Potter fans shun its existence. Great Post!
