Enola Holmes: Outsmarting the World’s Greatest Greatest Detective

Here’s a review of one of my all time favorite series, Enola Holmes! The first book in the series, Enola Holmes and the Case of the Missing Marquess, begins with Enola’s 14th birthday. It seems like fate when Enola, whose name backwards spells “alone,” is left by her mother on her 14th birthday, having left Enola’s presents in the hands of the servants, Mr. and Mrs. Lane. In desperation to find her mother, Enola writes to her much older brothers Sherlock and Mycroft, who she hasn’t seen in years. Her brothers arrive and find much to disapprove, in their eyes, of both Enola and the estate. Instead of a proper governess and attire, she was allowed to roam free, reading and doing whatever she wanted. In light of this, her brothers decide to send her to a boarding school. Enola is horrified. Her mother told her about how these boarding schools require girls to wear corsets. So, aided by some finances her mother had secreted to her, Enola runs away to London. In London, Enola has to avoid her brothers' many attempts to find her. In doing so she finds herself involved in many of Sherlock Holmes’ cases.

I really like Enola Holmes because the books are witty, funny, and offer a different take on Sherlock Holmes as a character. The books have received a lot of attention recently because of the Enola Holmes movies that have recently come out. I haven’t watched them, but I’ve heard they are good even though they do not follow the plot of the books exactly. If you enjoy mystery novels, I strongly suggest Enola Holmes!

Thank you for reading!

  2. From the summary, the series seems to portray Sherlock Holmes in a more negative light, which sounds interesting. I'm curious, do the books cover the events of specific Sherlock Holmes books? Overall, a very well written blog post.
