My Thoughts About Divergent

Hi guys! For this blog post I decided to read Divergent by Veronica Roth. It’s a dystopian novel where your life is decided by which faction you are placed in. Abnegation, Candor, Amity, Dauntless, and Erudite. The story follows 16-year-old Beatrice, who is an Abnegation, and was taught that she always had to be selfless to fit in with her faction members. However, being completely selfless doesn’t come naturally to her, and she never feels like she belongs in her faction. In this world, when people turn 16, they take an aptitude test, which will show which single faction they would best belong to. After the aptitude test, there is the Choosing Ceremony, which allows people to choose which faction they want to belong to for the rest of their lives. Though, when Beatrice takes the test, she is matched with three different factions, Dauntless, Erudite, and Abnegation. The overseer of her aptitude test informs Beatrice that she is a Divergent, an extremely dangerous thing. Beatrice must now choose a faction, possibly leaving her family behind, and learn how to keep the fact that she is Divergent from showing.

I haven’t completely finished Divergent yet (it's kind of a long book, about 500 pages), but from what I have read, it is a very cookie-cutter novel. It follows basically the same plot as every other YA dystopian novel: introduce the world and the political structure, main character finds out they are/have something that is dangerous, they leave their family, find a love interest that really shouldn’t be a love interest, and so on. However, it is an interesting concept, and I haven’t really seen anything like this before. The writing isn’t bad, just a little cliche sometimes, and in some places, the story seems a little rushed. Also, the love interest isn’t good. Like, I can see why Beatrice likes him (he’s the only person who is actually nice to her, gives her a feeling of home, whatever) but like, it’s kind of a weird age gap for teenagers (Beatrice is 16, he’s about 18). Overall, Divergent is a pretty good book, though I don’t think it is a must read.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I listened to the audiobook once. I appreciated the atmosphere, which comes through more, but I thought the plot weakened once the romance came in. I don't think I ended up finishing the book, but I appreciate you posting about it. Thanks!

  2. Hey sophia! I personally love this book. But I agree with you that it is a very predictable plot and that it can be very cliche sometimes.
