Finding my Genre

“What is your favorite genre to read?” is a question a lot of readers are asked. But, what if you don’t know? What if you aren’t a fan of reading? This was my case when I was younger, so this blogpost will explain how I found my favorite genre.

When I was little, reading was definitely not a priority for me. I would rather be doing anything else. School kinda took all the fun out of reading for me, so I never wanted to do it by choice. However, people that surrounded me, like my family and friends, loved to read, but at the time, I didn’t understand why. That’s when my mom introduced me to the world of fantasy with Harry Potter. Let me tell you, I ended up loving those books. I don’t want to give any spoilers, so I’ll just say that the chaos, magic, and story line was really entertaining to read. I loved how with each book, the pieces of the storyline came together which led to many satisfying realizations and like clicks if that makes sense, to come up. I was sucked into the story as if it was unfolding right in front of me. If every book is going to be like that, then you don’t have to ask me twice, I’m going to start reading.

From that point on, any time I was looking for a book to read, I’d look for a fantasy or just a fiction book. At my school library, I’d either ask the librarian for help, or just guide myself by the covers and titles of books. I’d also get many book recommendations from a close friend. She introduced me to the world of graphic novels, introducing me to Amulet, Cleopatra in Space, and so much more. Everything she recommended to me was also fiction (YAY). Having imagery to go off of while reading was really fun and added to the overall experience.

So… yeah! That was how I discovered I loved fiction with the help of recommendations from my family and friends. Thank you for reading my blogpost!
